Life Events
Well known singer, TV- and radio presenter, Pieter Koen, entertains Jacaranda FM listeners between 4 and 8pm on Sunday ending the weekend with nothing but “typically Sunday-boring”!
Born and raised in Standerton, Pieter completed his military service at 1 Parachute Battalion Bloemfontein, before studying Information Technology at the former Pretoria Technikon (TUT). It was here that his natural passion for entertainment took a more serious turn with a local community station in Pretoria that had an available spot. Pieter had no formal broadcasting qualification or experience, but, not being the type of student who takes no for an answer, he soon landed himself a job as a presenter on the “graveyard shift”.
He quickly moved up the ranks – landing himself a spot on the breakfast show after only a few weeks on air. Pieter joined another community radio station where he gained loads of additional experience in presenting a variety of shows in many different time slots.
After 7 years in radio, he made the decision to focus more on his live performances – touring South Africa, performing with other artists, building an impressive performing portfolio and meeting loads of interesting people. Since 2002, Pieter has also been a presenter for 3 programs on KykNET – adding even more people to an already massive fan base!
In July 2011, after 12 years away from radio, Pieter moved back in behind the mic with Jacaranda FM – the popularity of his show affirming his status as a firm crowd favourite!
Pieter was born and grew up in Standerton. He sang with the Drakensberg Boys Choir for a few years and matriculated at Standerton High School.
He completed his National service in Bloemfontein and studied at Technikon Pretoria. While studying, he started working at a community radio station where his voice became familiar on local airwaves for many years.
Later he became the presenter of an art programme, Kunskafee, and in 2003 started presenting the ever-popular magazine programme Kwêla on KykNET.
Pieter released his first album in 1997 and marketed and distributed the album himself. In 2002 he recorded Amper ’n Bloubul for the Blue Bulls rugby album and As Jy Horings Dra and later, Who Let The Boks Out? and Who Left The Boks Out?
In 2004 he recorded his next solo album, Skud Jou Biscuit after EMI offered him a recording contract.
