Potchefstroom seems to be the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to South African bands. Their latest export: ZEBRAMAN - a five-piece indie pop
dance offering straight from the popular student town.
ZEBRAMAN consists of Johan Viljoen on Vocals & Guitar, who started playing guitar at the age of 13. Inspired by the greats, Johan completed his BMus
Degree at the NWU in Potchefstroom. He records, mixes and produces music for various artists around the country and lectures in Music Technology at the
School of Music Conservatory. Keyboardist Jan-Meyer Verhoef is a classically trained pianist who also completed his BMus Degree in music at the NWU
with Johan. He is a very talented chess player and hosts many national chess tournaments.
Drummer Lolke-Louis Claassen hails from Pretoria. He started playing drums in primary school, and studied Sound Engineering at the Academy of Sound
Engineering. He is best known for his role as drummer for Afrikaans rock band, Glaskas and also performs with Moses Metro Man, Jako Meyer and Deon
Meiring. Bassist Franzua ‘Zua’ van den Heever received his first guitar lesson at the age of 9, and through the years as his musical taste developed,
music and poetry became an integral part of his being. He grew up in Bloemfontein and went on to study a B.Sc. in Sound Engineering Technology at the
Academy of Sound Engineering. He is also pursuing an N.Dip in Electronics and Electronic Communication and contributes lyrics to various projects apart
from playing bass in ZEBRAMAN.
Wikus van Aswegen joined ZEBRAMAN in 2021, and started making music at the age of 5. He grew up in Kazakhstan and moved to South Africa when
he was 6 years old, and has ever since resided in Potchefstroom. He is currently a videographer and for ZEBRAMAN he features on vocals and plays a
variety of instruments including percussion, keyboard and guitar.
The bands describes their sound as music you can dance to, drive to and vibe to: A celebration of the many different styles and textures they find around
the world and in South Africa while addressing everyday topics such as freedom, love and sacrifice.
ZEBRAMAN is half zebra, half man. With zebras having black and white stripes instead of one grey coat and their colours co-existing with each other, they
are an embodiment of all the different cultures within our beautiful country - the essence of what it means to be South African.
“We write music that uplifts us, and the people around us. It is music that lends itself to more than just one culture, or mindset, which is
something we need in South Africa.”
Their first offering was a single called GREEN & LOVIN’, released in September 2020. Featuring African percussion with hard hitting drums, clean electric
guitars, crazy keyboard sounds, fat bass lines and frontman Johan’s dramatic voice - the song is exactly what ZEBRAMAN sounds like and the perfect first
introduction to the band. Their self-titled EP was released in October 2020. ZEBRAMAN, the EP was written over a 6 month period, starting in September
2019 and recorded and produced by Johan Viljoen at Die Stam in Potchefstroom. With words to say and music to play, the EP features the recurrent
theme of choosing your own freedom and showcases an extravagant musical journey to choosing your own path and letting go of what you don't need.
In December 2020, the band released their second single aptly titled DECEMBER. The song contains summer-like electric guitar with hard hitting drums
and a fat bass, together with South African percussion elements.
Their third single, RADIO ROMEO was released in February 2021 and gave the band their first taste of commercial success with the single reaching the #1
spot on the Jacaranda SA Top 20 Chart, as well as Top 10 spots on OFM’s Central SA Top 20 and the SA Top 10 on Radio Helderberg.
Their single, SUNLIGHT followed in May 2021, and their latest single, SWIMMING IN THE SUN was released in November 2021 and can currently be
heard on airwaves across South Africa.
The band’s brand new single, SUMMER HIGH is set for release in August 2022, with a brand new album later this year.

ZEBRAMAN Release New Single | SUMMER HIGH
Friday, 26 August sees the release of a brand new single by Potchefstroom locals, ZEBRAMAN.
The single, entitled SUMMER HIGH is the first single from their brand new album, set for release
later this year.
The single was written in June 2022 on a Sunday afternoon in Potchefstroom by Johan Viljoen and
Franzua van den Heever. It was the first time the duo wrote a song together since Radio Romeo,
and this particular song was inspired by a reminiscent moment as the sun was shining on Johan
through his window.
SUMMER HIGH is a slightly Pop offering which features a big, full sound with hints of retro
keyboards as played by Jan-Meyer Verhoef, combined with playful vocals and nostalgic melodies
and lyrics. As a single, it touches on a topic we are all familiar with: Romantic relationships that
suddenly ends because you were too in love to realise that you were losing yourself. The band set
out to create something to capture the idea of a cyclic love tragedy that seems to repeat itself.
“Sometimes in relationships you lose yourself because you are willing to change yourself to make
the relationship work, but what you don’t know is that your infatuation is merely a sort of seasonal
‘high’, like seasons of the year (and life). Summers are always that time that relationships seems to
be in their peak and it always seems to go downward from there. We tend to treasure the time we
have together and it feels like some sort of high that you never want to stop, until something heart-
breaking happens out of the blue.”
Maintaining an authentic ZEBRAMAN feel, SUMMER HIGH contains big bass and drums together
with retro instruments and piano sounds from the 80s. Frontman Johan’s vocals float seamlessly
over the song while the drum beat keeps moving the song forward. Fans can look forward to a
sentimental, yet fresh sound the band has not explored before.
“People will be able to relate to the lyrics because romantic disappointments are a universal fact of
life; anyone who has ever felt they needed to change who they are in order for a relationship to
work out would be able to relate with this song.
